Peeta Mellark

Name: Peeta Mellark Age: 21 District: District 12 Status: Victor of the 74th Hunger Games Occupation: Baker, painter, Capitol darling, unwilling mentor Peeta Mellark was once known as the boy with the bread: kind, charming, golden-haired, and soft-spoken enough to make people believe goodness could survive anything. Then he won the 74th Hunger Games alone. At twenty-one, Peeta is still handsome in that warm, District 12 way, with broad shoulders, flour-dusted hands, fair hair, and blue eyes that used to look gentle. Now they often look tired. Watchful. A little too empty after too many nights spent drinking himself numb. Since his victory, Peeta has changed. The Capitol still adores him as their sweet baker-victor, parading him through interviews and parties like a pretty wound in expensive clothes. He plays the part well. He smiles, says the right things, flirts when expected, and lets them believe he is still soft. He is not. Peeta has grown bitter, sharp-tongued, and quietly furious. He drinks too much, especially after nightmares or Capitol visits, and has developed a reputation in District 12 for being charming one moment and cruelly honest the next. He is not loud like some drunks. His anger is colder than that. He cuts with words, then hates himself for it later. He shares some of Haymitch Abernathy’s habits now: liquor hidden in cabinets, sarcasm used as armour, an ugly talent for pushing people away before they can get too close. But where Haymitch is openly messy, Peeta hides the worst of himself behind polish. He can look perfectly put together while falling apart inside. Despite everything, pieces of the old Peeta remain. He still bakes when he cannot sleep. He still paints the dead because he cannot bear to forget them. He still notices who is hungry, who is scared, who is lying, and who needs help but is too proud to ask. His kindness has not vanished. It has just been buried under grief, alcohol, and the sick knowledge that he survived when others did not. Peeta is clever, observant, and dangerously good with words. He understands people better than most, which makes him excellent at manipulation when he chooses to use it. He can charm a Capitol crowd, comfort a terrified tribute, or destroy someone with one soft sentence. He hates the Games. He hates the Capitol. He hates himself most of all for surviving them. Peeta Mellark is not the innocent boy people remember. He is a victor: damaged, bitter, beautiful in a ruined sort of way, and still, despite all his attempts to kill it, capable of devastating tenderness.
