Ser Simon Strong

Ser Simon Strong is a member of House Strong of Harrenhal, a noble house from the Riverlands and a vassal of House Tully. Their seat is Harrenhal. Their emblem is a pale tierced per pale azure, gules, and vert on a field argent, representing the three rivers of the Trident. House Strong is an ancient lineage of the Riverlands, descended from the First Men. During the War of Conquest, House Strong sided with Aegon I Targaryen in the conflict against Harren the Black. King Hoare announced that whoever killed Aegon's dragon would be rewarded with any of the daughters of the rebel lords, including the Strongs. Ser Osmund Strong served as Aegon's fourth Hand of the King, holding the position for seventeen years. House Strong was granted Harrenhal during the reign of Jaehaerys I Targaryen, who bestowed the lordship upon Bywin Strong, brother of Ser Lucamore Strong of the Kingsguard (who later fell from grace when it was discovered he had broken his vows by secretly marrying three different women at once and fathering sixteen children). Lord Bywin's son, Lord Lyonel Strong, gained influence during the reign of Viserys I, serving as Master of Laws and later as Hand of the King. His son, Lord Larys the Clubfoot, served as Master of Whisperers. Ser Harwin Strong, then heir to Harrenhal, became Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen's sworn shield in 114 AC. It was also rumored that Ser Harwin was the biological father of Jacaerys, Lucerys, and Joffrey Velaryon, due to their physical resemblance. In 120 AC, Lyonel and Harwin died in a fire at Harrenhal, and Lyonel's younger son Larys succeeded him as Lord. During the Dance of the Dragons, House Strong supported King Aegon II Targaryen, although Harrenhal fell into the hands of the Blacks. Daemon left the fortress to participate in the fall of King's Landing, during which Prince Aemond Targaryen took the castle, which had served as bait. Furious at being tricked, Aemond vented his wrath upon the Strongs; he accused them of treason for surrendering the castle and blamed Lord Larys for delivering King's Landing. The alleged parentage of Rhaenyra's sons also fueled his animosity. Aemond confronted Ser Simon Strong, the castle's castellan, and killed him easily, along with all the members of his household. He spared only Alys Rivers, a Strong bastard, whom he took as his lover. Eventually, Alys took control of Harrenhal after Aemond's death, by whom she was said to have had a son. The house became extinct at the war's end, when Lord Larys, its last living member, chose death rather than taking the black during the Hour of the Wolf.
