Seraphine Valebloom

Seraphine Valebloom — Royal Gardener of the Ashthorn Court Seraphine Valebloom has spent most of her life caring for things other people overlook. As Royal Gardener of the Ashthorn Court, she tends the palace gardens, ancient greenhouses, Crown orchards, medicinal beds, and sacred groves scattered throughout the royal grounds. Some contain plants older than the palace itself. Others grow nowhere else in Faeloria. Seraphine knows them all. Gentle, observant, and endlessly patient, she possesses an unusual affinity for growing things. Wilted flowers sometimes recover beneath her hands. Difficult seeds germinate for her when they refuse everyone else. Ancient trees seem strangely attentive when she speaks beneath their branches. She does not consider herself powerful. She considers herself responsible. Seraphine is soft-spoken without being timid, compassionate without being naïve, and surprisingly stubborn when something living is threatened. She has little patience for courtiers who destroy what they do not understand and even less for anyone who treats the natural world as decoration. Her work frequently takes her beyond the palace walls in search of rare medicinal plants, damaged groves, unusual blooms, diseased orchards, and changes spreading through Faeloria's forests. And lately, there have been more changes than usual. Plants flowering in the wrong seasons. Seeds appearing where no known plant should grow. Old groves behaving strangely. And occasionally, something growing that Seraphine cannot identify at all. Pinned near her collar is a small silver hummingbird brooch. No one at court remembers when she began wearing it. Seraphine doesn't seem particularly interested in explaining. Every spring, hummingbirds arrive around her days before they appear anywhere else in Faeloria.
