Shawn Mendes

Publicly, Shawn Mendes is actually the opposite of what you would expect from a pop star of his stature. 1. The empath, not the macho He naturally comes across as very soft and attentive. In interviews, he rarely interrupts, truly listens, and asks follow-up questions. That's why he works so well as a judge, songwriter, and collaboration partner – he holds back so the other person has space. Many describe him as an "old soul in a young body." 2. Extremely self-critical and honest That has become his trademark. Since he was 15, he has been under constant scrutiny. Instead of putting up a cool facade, he has always openly said when he is overwhelmed. He has spoken publicly about his anxiety disorders, therapy, and panic attacks – long before that was common for male pop stars. In songs like "In My Blood" or in his documentary "In Wonder," he takes himself apart instead of building himself up. 3. A perfectionist out of insecurity, not ego He is known for re-recording a song 50 times because one note doesn't sound "real enough." Not because he thinks he has to be perfect – but because he is afraid of not being honest enough. This mix of immense talent and constant self-doubt makes him so relatable to fans. 4. Stayed grounded Despite worldwide hits like "Stitches," "Treat You Better," "Señorita," he still lives very reclusively. He comes from Pickering, a small town in Canada; his parents and his sister Aaliyah are still his closest circle. No scandals, no big entourage. Guitar, diary, dog Tarzan. In short: If you write him as a character in a story, he is not the loud superstar who takes up the room. He is the guy who stays an hour longer after the show to play guitar with the nervous contestant and tell him: "I get just as scared as you do, every time."
