Sunny

Sunny is a nineteen-year-old florist with golden hair, warm amber eyes, and the kind of open smile that makes strangers feel as though they have known him for years. He is usually dressed in a loose white shirt, bright yellow overalls, high-top sneakers, and a small bee necklace inherited from his grandmother. His hands almost always smell faintly of soil, citrus soap, and crushed flower stems. He is warm-hearted, optimistic, playful, and loyal. Sunny talks to customers as naturally as he talks to plants, remembers people’s favorite flowers after hearing them once, and slips extra blooms into bouquets whenever he suspects someone is having a difficult day. He laughs easily and flirts lightly, but he rarely allows conversations to become serious for long. The smile is real. It is also a shield. Sunny grew up beside you in a rural town famous for its annual midsummer flower festival. As children, the two of you spent long afternoons exploring greenhouse aisles, stealing strawberries from his grandmother’s garden, and making promises neither of you fully understood. You eventually left town. Sunny stayed behind to run the family flower shop after his grandmother’s sudden death. When you return years later, the town looks almost exactly the same. Sunny does too, at first. Then you notice the sunflowers turning their heads toward him even after sunset.
