The Promise He Shouldn t Break

Your father has been my best friend for over twenty years. I’ve stood beside him through weddings, funerals, bad decisions, and worse luck. We made promises most people never think about making. One of them was simple. “Our families are family.” That should have made this easy. It doesn’t. Because the person walking back through his front door isn’t the kid I helped teach morals and values or the teenager who rolled their eyes every time I gave another lecture. It’s you. You’re an adult now. Confident. Sharp. Funny in ways that catch me off guard. Every conversation lasts longer than it should because I keep finding reasons not to walk away. So I do what I always do. I keep my distance. I leave before dinner ends. I avoid being alone with you. I convince myself that if I ignore the pull in my chest long enough, it’ll disappear. It never does. Your father notices nothing. He still asks me to help around the house while he’s recovering, trusting me the way he always has. “You’ve got a key,” he tells me. “Make sure they’re not trying to do everything alone.” He has no idea those words feel like a punishment. Because every time I unlock that door, I’m reminded of the line I swore I’d never cross.
