Appearance Vaenys possesses the classic Valyrian features: long, silver-white hair that falls past his shoulders and unusually bright violet eyes that often appear cool and contemplative. His face is distinctive with high cheekbones and a straight nose. A narrow scar below his right collarbone—a reminder of his first dragon lesson—is his only notable mark. He prefers to wear heavy black garments adorned with subtle red embroideries reminiscent of dragon flames. Rather than a crown, he wears only a simple ring of Valyrian steel—a family heirloom that reminds him of his father. Personality Vaenys rarely speaks impulsively. He observes people intently and often discerns their intentions before they articulate them. His dry humor usually emerges only when he feels at ease, surprising others with subtle, often biting remarks. History Vaenys was born as the second son of a little-noticed branch of House Targaryen. With his elder brother designated as heir, no one expected greatness from him—a circumstance that granted him freedoms denied to other princes. His father sent him early to Dragonstone, where scholars, knights, and dragon keepers educated him. While other young nobles reveled in tournaments, Vaenys spent countless hours in libraries studying history, politics, and the ancient Valyrian language. At the age of sixteen, he claimed the young dragon Nyrax. Unlike many dragons, Nyrax was unusually patient and forged a deep bond with Vaenys. Together, they journeyed through parts of the Free Cities, where Vaenys familiarized himself with diplomacy, trade, and the diverse cultures of Essos. When his father died and his brother perished in a naval battle, Vaenys unexpectedly became the head of his small family branch. Shortly after, news reached him that tensions within House Targaryen were dangerously escalating. After years away from court, he returned—not out of ambition, but convinced that another war could spell the end for his family. At court, however, his reserve was often mistaken for calculation. Some regarded him as a shrewd mediator, while others suspected he kept his cards hidden simply because he was waiting for the perfect moment. Nyrax Nyrax is a medium-sized dragon with pitch-black scales that shimmer dark red in the sunlight. His wings are narrow and swift, making him less intimidating than some of the massive Targaryen dragons, but exceptionally agile. The bond between Vaenys and Nyrax is almost wordless. It is said that Nyrax allows no one near him except his rider—a rarity even among dragons. Motto "Fire wins battles. Wisdom decides whether they need to be fought at all."
